Cashcampus Memory Lane (part 4)

Ok, so the thing that really started to get Cashcampus.com rolling was WOM (word of mouth). Yeah that’s right, the best marketing that you can ever use to spread your business is by using your own mouth.

After I stopped using the ineffective flyer marketing, I went on a word of mouth campaign. I couldn’t stop speaking. In the bars, the clubs, the cafeteria, library, restaurants, just about anywhere people existed, I lurked in the shadows waiting to kill my prey (haha… I mean waiting to tell them about my business).

When you start a business you really have to be hungry to educate people about what your business can do for them, that’s the key. It’s not about what they can do for you, it’s all about what you can do for them.

Since people always asked me what I did for a job, I would always jump on the opportunity to tell them all about cashcampus.com and how they could make money from selling their research information.

Look for good opportunities to start talking about your business with someone. There’s always a way to start talking business without someone thinking that you’re trying to sell them something. So get clever and give it some thought. There’s no bulletproof way, so be creative and try to touch some ones soft spot by offering a solution to their problem.

I would (and still do) carry around a stack of business cards with me, ready to give out at any time. It’s very important to get yourself some business cards, even if it’s those cheap ones from Staples (they get the job done, right). Sharing a card with someone interested in your business will give them a way to explore further about what you really do.

Here’s an image of the cards I used when promoting cashcampus.com. I actually still use the same cards ‘til this day. Hey, they get the job done so I didn’t think it necessary to get new ones made up:

I can’t say enough good things about using WOM marketing. It’s free, it’s easy, and it’s a good way to network and meet new people. It’s all about having fun and getting out there and socializing. You have to be the biggest marketer in your business, because nobody else will be.

After a few months of WOM and really getting the buzz going, good things started happening. More and more subscribers started to sign on and for the first time, a good amount of people started making money by selling their research information.

I was also making some money too by charging a small commission from every transaction. Things were finally starting to go my way for a change and I was definitely happy.

One morning I woke up in my dorm room to a call from a reporter at Albany University. In my next post I’ll share that with you…
